Summer Read & Bead

Summer Reading | Read & Bead

We needed an innovative system for Summer Reading incentives and so began the idea for "Read & Bead." With this program, we saw a 24 percent increase in youth participation with a 500 percent decrease in cost. Since its inception, I have written several blog posts, presented at the Massachusetts Librarian Association Conference in 2016, recorded a webinar for the Massachusetts Library System in 2017, and presented at the SAILS Library Network Showcase in 2018.

Meeting Community Needs

Programs | Seasonal, STEM, & More

Our community is ever-changing and the library evolves to meet the needs and interests of our patrons as they grow. I have developed and facilitated a variety of programs for all ages that seek to educate and entertain; these projects include incorporating American Sign Language into Trick-or-Treat events, combining STEM and creativity with books and crafting (such as a gingerbread train build after a reading of "The Mighty Steam Engine" by Yvonna Ng), and Stuffed Animal Sleepovers with special scrapbooks imagined by our teen volunteers (example linked here).

Innovations during COVID-19

Flexibility, creativity, and perseverance

The COVID-19 pandemic affected individuals and communities everywhere but libraries stepped up in unique ways to support patrons and serve our community as effectively and as safely as possible during unprecedented times. Many of the innovations enacted during this time have been kept in the Library  and even expanded; examples include our Education Kits (to support local educators and caregivers), outdoor events, and passive programs for teens.
